The dialogue was quick and funny and witty. Everything just seemed to gel for this movie. And not only is it a great story filled with heart, and heartbreak, and history. but it'll actually make you laugh at parts too. This movie deserves to Best Picture of the Year, easily. And Viola Davis deserves Best Actress. Hands down. No contest. See it! I've seen it twice and intend to see it again before it leaves my theater. Stop typing, right now. Log off, grab your car keys and go to the movie theater to see this movie. Now. Why are you still sitting there reading this? Scoot! Git! Go.

Unless blacks are 14% of all professions, especially the ones that create wealth like upper middle class businesspeople, and the proverbial doctors and lawyers, things aren't resolved.
This film does indicate that African-Americans in Hollywood STILL aren't fully equal. How many major Hollywood films have you ever seen with a true black female lead? Especially ones where she doesn't play a 'black' character? I guess those movies aren't really there.
I first saw Viola Davis in an episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent, where she was the though mastermind bad cop. Ever since, she just played 'black' or 'token black. Sad.
The latter third is a feel good movie. It's understandable why, it's hard to accurately portray the bleakness of those years, especially for a white writer. You can see the denial of harshness of those years right here on these pages and in other reviews. There's complaints that they can't be critical about this, in other words, the film is a race card that's been played. Complaining about the race card is a deceptive and slightly more subtle form of racism, but it's racism nonetheless.
This country is not yet ready for a true portrait of slavery, or of Jim Crow times.
